Linux - Back to Kubuntu

For the last five to six months, my main desktop was running OpenSUSE 13.2, and overall I liked it. Over the past couple of months I notice that each time the kernel was updated, I had to manually go in and recompile the video drivers for my NVIDIA video card. At most it took about 5 minutes, so I wasn't all that bothered by it. However one day two weeks ago I got the usual command line prompt after a kernel upgrade. But this time the usual manual recompile trick didn't work. After working on it for a day, I decided to jump ship and try another distro. I'm a big fan of KDE, so I went with Kubuntu 15.04 first, which features the new Plasma 5 desktop. I really like the layout, but at this time there is no icon in the system tray for Dropbox, so you don't know if Dropbox is working or not. I played around with several other distros, until I finally settled on Kubuntu 14.04, with is a LTS (Long Term Support) release. It still features KDE4, and the Dropbox icon works perfectly. I came to the conclusion that stability and familiarity is more important for me on my main desktop then the latest bells and whistles. In comparison, OpenSUSE 13.2 is running on my Dell Vostro 1500 notebook, and I've yet to have a problem with it.

52 Words Every Christian Should Know

A while back I came across the book, "52 Words Every Christian Should Know" by Kendell Easley. I'm impressed by it because in this age of post-modernism where words can mean whatever you want, Christian theology is being twisted into something that robs the believer of the original definition and meaning.
The author picked 52 concepts of the Christian faith, and gives definitions and explanations of each. As I read them I'll post what the author gives as a definition of each word.
My intent is to understand the original meaning of doctrine, not what our culture has changed it to mean.

1. Glory God's glory is the display of His greatness, goodness, and beauty so that persons are aware of Him through sensory experiences such as sight and sound. To glorify God means to respond to His revealed glory in the ways Scripture teaches, such as praise, love, joy and obedience.

2. Holiness – Holiness is the quality of being set apart. God is holy because He is like no other, and He exists eternally as the Holy Spirit. God's holiness includes His moral perfection and righteousness. Persons, places, and things set apart for God are hold rather than common.

DeGarmo & Key "The Pledge" Verses & Lyrics Day Ten

When we get discouraged, here are reminders of God's love...
If God is For Us (Who Can Be Against Us?)

Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (30) For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Galatians 6:9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Joshua 1:5-6 No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. (6) Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them.

Matthew 28:20b “ And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

2 Corinthians 2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Matthew 6:33-34 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (34) Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. (10) That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Romans 8:28-39 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (29) For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. (30) And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. (31) What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? (32) He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all--how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? (33) Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. (34) Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died--more than that, who was raised to life--is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. (35) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? (36) As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." (37) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (38) For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, (39) neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

If God is For Us (Who Can Be Against Us?) Lyrics

If you're weary, don't lose hope in fighting the good fight,
Just remember God is with you through the darkest night,
In the heat of battle keep your head up high,
God is marching with us; he's always at our side.

If God is for us, who can be against us?
No power on Earth can take his love away,
If God is for us, who can be against us?
We can live in victory today.

When you worry, when you feel like the world is caving in,
He is stronger than our weakness, faithful to the end,
Like the master taught us, there's life beyond the cross,
Even though we're weary, our battle won't be lost.

If God is for us, who can be against us?
No power on Earth can take his love away,
If God is for us, who can be against us?
We can live in victory today.

If God is for us, who can be against us?
No power on Earth can take his love away,
If God is for us, who can be against us?
We can live in victory today,
We can live in victory today.

DeGarmo & Key "The Pledge" Verses & Lyrics Day Nine

When is the Christian lifestyle like a marathon?
Right on Track

Philippians 3:12-14 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. (13) Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, (14) I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. (25) Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. (26) Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. (27) No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Philippians 2:14-18 Do everything without complaining or arguing, (15) so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe (16) as you hold out the word of life--in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. (17) But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. (18) So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Hebrews 12:1-3 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (2) Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (3) Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Right on Track Lyrics

I can feel it tugging,
This world, it tries to slow me down,
In this race I'm running, I won't give up one inch of ground,
Headed for the future, I leave behind the past,
Walking with my saviour, I know...I know...I know I'm free at last.

Right on track,
Pressing forward, won't look back,
Right on track,
With my eyes on Jesus, I'm right on track.

I can see the finish,
I will not stop before it's done,
It's not enough to enter, I've got to cross that finish line, oh yeah,
Even though I stumble, the Lord will watch my pace,
Looking up to Jesus, I know...I know...I know I'll win this race.

Right on track,
Pressing forward, won't look back,
Right on track,
With my eyes on Jesus, I'm right on track.

Headed for the future, I leave behind the past,
Walking with my saviour, I know...I know...I know I'm free at last.

Right on track,
Pressing forward, won't look back,
Right on track,
With my eyes on Jesus,
Right on track,
I'm pressing forward, won't look back,
Right on track,
With my eyes on Jesus, I'm right on track.

I said, I'm right on track,
I'm right on track, (right on track)
Right on track, (right on track)
I'm right on track, (right on track)
I said I'm right on track, (right on track

DeGarmo & Key "The Pledge" Verses & Lyrics Day Eight

Who will stand up for the rights of the 1.3 million unborn children who are aborted in America each year?
Who Will

Psalms 139:13-16 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. (14) I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (15) My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, (16) your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Proverbs 24:11-12 Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. (12) If you say, "But we knew nothing about this," does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to what he has done?

Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

Psalms 82:3-4 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. (4) Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

Isaiah 6:8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

 Who Will Lyrics

It's in his image they're created, each one a precious gift of life,
How can we steal away their future?
What gives us the power? What gives us the right?

Who will stand up for the children?
Who will fight the battle for them?
Who will speak up for the unborn child?

They long for life with every heartbeat,
They speak with tiny hands and feet,
But who will help our nation hear them?
It is up to you and it is up to me.

Who will stand up for the children?
Who will fight the battle for them?
Who will speak up for the unborn child?

Who is gonna be the voice for those who have no say or choice?
My heart tells me what I must do,
It is up to me and it is up to you.

Who will? (we will)
Who will? (we will, we will)
Who will speak up for the unborn child?
Who will? (we will)
Who will? (we will, we will)
Who will speak up for the unborn child?
Who will stand up for the children? (we will)
Who will fight the battle for them? (we will, we will)
Who will speak up for the unborn child?

DeGarmo & Key "The Pledge" Verses & Lyrics Day Seven

What is our Christian responsibility regarding the redemption of our country?
Let's Get Upset

Leviticus 18:24-28 'Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. (25) Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. (26) But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the aliens living among you must not do any of these detestable things, (27) for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. (28) And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.

2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Psalms 33:8-12 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him. (9) For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. (10) The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. (11) But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. (12) Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance.

Colossians 3:1-14 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. (2) Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (3) For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. (4) When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. (5) Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. (6) Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. (7) You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. (8) But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. (9) Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices (10) and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. (11) Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. (12) Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (13) Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. (14) And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

 Let's Get Upset Lyrics

I was raised in America when streets were safe and children learned to pray, learned to pray,
Things have changed and it's not the same: the hand of God that we felt has gone away, gone away.

Let's get upset, and turn this country upside down,
Let's get upset,
With Jesus' help we'll turn this land around

We used to blush at vulgarity; now we watch while the TV plays all night, plays all night,
Used to stand with our backbones strong, now the drugs turn our courage into fright, it's not right.

Let's get upset, and turn this country upside down,
Let's get upset,
With Jesus' help we'll turn this land around

If we, as Christians, pray, the Lord will clear the way,
We are examples to the rest,
And if we place God first he will heal all our hurts,
And we will see our country blessed, yeah.

Let's get upset and turn this country upside down,
Let's get upset,
With Jesus' help we'll turn this land around.

Let's get upset, (got to get upset, yeah)
Let's get upset,
Let's get upset,
Let's get upset,
Let's get upset,
Let's get upset.

DeGarmo & Key "The Pledge" Verses & Lyrics Day Six

Who is life in the present so-called “New Age” as sinful as ever?
Life in the New Age

Matthew 24:4-14 Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. (5) For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ, ' and will deceive many. (6) You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. (7) Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. (8) All these are the beginning of birth pains. (9) Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. (10) At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, (11) and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. (12) Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, (13) but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. (14) And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Matthew 24:36-39 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (37) As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. (38) For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; (39) and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

2 Timothy 3:1-7 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. (2) People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, (3) without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, (4) treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- (5) having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. (6) They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, (7) always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.

Matthew 25:41-46 Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. (42) For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, (43) I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' (44) They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' (45) He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' (46) Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.

Deuteronomy 18:10-14 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, (11) or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. (12) Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. (13) You must be blameless before the LORD your God. (14) The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so.

Romans 1:18-25 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, (19) since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. (20) For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. (21) For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. (22) Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools (23) and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. (24) Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. (25) They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.

Life in the New Age Lyrics

The condor sleeps safe in the wild...we can't save an unborn child,
That's life in the new age, life in the new age,
Can't stop drugs, can't stop AIDS, can't undo the mess we made,
That's life in the new age, that's life in the new age,
And children around the world will starve, while we sit in a seminar,
That's life in the new age, life in the new age,
Mum reads astrology, the kids are raised by MTV
That's life in the new age, life in the new age,
God is self, self is God - I can see why you're so odd,
That's life in the new age, life in the new age,
Children 'round the world will starve, while we sit in a seminar,
That's life in the new age, life in the new age.

Could this be the end we're seeing, racing toward that final page?
If it is, we'll soon be leaving.

So pack up your bags, get ready to go out of the world, out of the New Age, yeah.

Life in the new age,
It's life in the new age,
It's life in the new age,
In the new age,
In the new age,
In the new age,

DeGarmo & Key "The Pledge" Verses & Lyrics Day Five

What must each of us do to receive eternal life? Take...
The Pledge

Romans 3:10-12 As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; (11) there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. (12) All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one."

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 3:20-26 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. (21) But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. (22) This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, (23) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (24) and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (25) God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- (26) he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Philippians 3:7-16 But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. (8) What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ (9) and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ-- the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. (10) I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, (11) and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. (12) Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. (13) Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, (14) I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (15) All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. (16) Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

Acts 2:37-39 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" (38) Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (39) The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. (5) Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (6) These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. (7) Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (8) Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. (9) Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

The Pledge Lyrics

He died for me, I'll live for him.

It's a world of choices, patterned to confuse,
Distracting, little voices whisper what to do,
Searching for the pieces, one step from the edge,
Turn your heart to Jesus, make this solemn pledge...

He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him.

Above all lords and regents, he is king of kings,
I'm pledging my allegiance through these words I sing,
Take this oath of service, write it on your wall,
It's our only purpose for living life at all.

He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him.

He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him,
He died for me, I'll live for him,
